Which basketball should you buy?

When you want to purchase a basketball, you’ll notice that there are many different types of balls available. One thing is certain: you will find a suitable ball. But how do you find the ball that suits you best? Which basketball size is right for you? And what makes a good basketball?

Which basketball size?

Basketballs are made in different sizes. This relates to the weight and circumference of the ball. Check below which size you need:

Size 3: Used as a “fun ball” to practice skills.

Size 4: Used by children up to 8 years old.

Size 5: Used by children up to 12 years old.

Size 6: Used by all women aged 13 and older and boys aged 13 to 15.

Size 7: Used by men aged 15 and older.

Official game sizes

Men’s games are played with a size 7 ball. Women’s games are played with a size 6 ball. 3x3 basketball is played with a ball that has the circumference of size 6, but the weight of size 7.

Indoor and outdoor

The difference between an indoor and an outdoor basketball mainly lies in the material of the outer layer. The outer layer must be able to withstand the surface and environment in which the ball is used. Outdoor basketballs are made from tougher, harder materials. This is necessary to withstand rough outdoor surfaces such as tiles, asphalt, and loose stones. Outdoor basketballs are generally made of rubber. Rubber is durable, but it provides less grip. Indoor basketballs are usually made of composite leather, which is a combination of different materials. This material is highly suitable for hardwood and synthetic courts. Unlike a rubber ball, a composite leather ball has an inner bladder. The inner bladder helps the ball maintain its shape better, but it does not bounce as high as a rubber ball.

Does an outdoor basketball last longer?

No, in general indoor and outdoor basketballs have the same lifespan. However, if you frequently use an indoor ball outdoors, it will wear out faster. The outer layer of an indoor ball is not designed for outdoor use.

Tips to extend the lifespan of your ball

Tip 1: Inflate your ball properly (and on time)! When the ball is properly inflated, it will bounce better and maintain its shape. If you don’t use the ball for a long time, it can lose air and become misshapen.

Tip 2: Keep the ball dry. If the ball gets wet from rain or cleaning, always dry it thoroughly. After rain comes sunshine, which brings us to tip 3.

Tip 3: Store your ball indoors. Sunlight can cause discoloration. Has it rained or did you clean your ball? Do not leave it in the sun to dry, as this may cause cracks in the leather.
