Read moreWhat are stencils and why are they important on the tennis court
Stencils are useful tools for temporarily and accurately marking lines or shapes on tennis courts. They are mostly used during training sessions to highlight specific situations or to help players practice with more focus. Think of service boxes, positioning circles, or movement routes that need to be marked quickly and consistently.
As a coach during a tennis training or clinic, you want to create structure right away. With a well-chosen stencil, you can provide clear visual aids that help players better understand where they should be on the court. Additionally, stencils ensure that trainings look the same every time, promoting consistency and clarity.
Different types of stencils explained
Stencils come in all shapes and sizes, each designed for a specific training purpose. Large rectangular stencils, for example, are used to mark zones for rally drills. Circular shapes are ideal for indicating placement or foot positioning. Other stencils might feature arrows or lines to simulate movement directions.
In addition to shape, the materials used also vary. There are flexible plastic stencils that lie flat easily on the court. More rigid materials are better suited for frequent or intense use. Brands like ONCOURT OFFCOURT, Tourna, and Unique offer a wide range of durable options suitable for both indoor and outdoor courts. What you need depends on your training environment and how often you plan to use them.
Smart and effective use of stencils during training
Using stencils begins with a clean, dry surface. Place the stencil at the desired spot, hold it firmly in place, and apply markings using sports chalk or tape, for example. Make sure the stencil doesn’t shift to ensure precise lines. Repeat as necessary for symmetry or repetition drills.
After training, it's a good idea to store stencils in a dry, flat place to prevent warping or damage. Cleaning them regularly with a damp cloth extends their lifespan. With consistent stencil use, players learn to automatically choose better positions and understand where to focus on the court. This makes your training instantly more effective.
Who are stencils suitable for and what are their benefits
For coaches, stencils are an essential tool: they save time, are precise, and support a clear training plan. Especially in group lessons with mixed levels, they are ideal for adding structure to the court.
Tennis clubs also benefit from using stencils during youth training, clinics, or demonstrations. They make it easier to quickly and efficiently set up consistent training areas. Recreational players enjoy using stencils as a tool to practice on their own and improve their shot patterns. It helps you get more out of your training, regardless of your level or goals.
