When should you replace your knee pads?

Knee pads are an essential part of your volleyball equipment. They protect your knees during dives, falls and slides across the floor. But how do you know when it's time to replace your knee pads? Here are some important signs that indicate your knee pads are losing their function.

Reduced cushioning

The main job of knee pads is to provide cushioning during impacts. If you notice that you feel more pain or discomfort when landing or sliding, this is a sign that the padding has become thinner. Check whether the foam regains its shape when you press or lean on it. If the padding does not spring back, it means that its protective effect has been greatly reduced.

Wear and tear

Wear and tear on the outside, such as tears, holes or fraying, can quickly lead to further tearing of the knee pad. Damaged fabric also offers less grip and stability, causing your knee pads to shift more quickly during play.

Loss of elasticity

If your knee pads no longer fit snugly around your knees and slide down during movement, the elastic bands have lost their elasticity and the knee pads may slip down more easily.

Sweat odour

When you are exercising intensively, sweat droplets quickly appear. This is logical and completely normal. However, it can affect the smell of your sports equipment. With prolonged use of knee pads, a persistent odour can develop, even after several washes. To prevent bacterial growth, we recommend purchasing new knee pads.

Lifespan

How often you play also determines how quickly your knee pads need to be replaced. If you use them 3 to 4 times a week, they will naturally last less time than if you use them once a week. Check them regularly for wear and tear and do the cushioning test to stay safe while playing.

Diverse range

Your knee pads are there to protect your knees, but only if they are in good condition. By regularly checking for loss of function, you ensure that you remain optimally protected.
