Tips for Parents of Hockey Kids: How to Choose the Perfect Junior Hockey Stick

Is your child just starting hockey, or moving up from the youngest age group to junior level? Then it’s time for new hockey gear! One of the most important items: the right hockey stick. Sticks come in many variations. Length, weight, curve, and carbon percentage. All of which affect performance. In this blog, we’ll help you understand what to look for so you can choose the best stick together with your child.

What Stick Length Fits Best?

Hockey sticks come in different lengths, just like players do. Choosing the right stick length is essential. A stick that’s too long makes it difficult to learn proper technique, while a stick that’s too short reduces hitting power and can lead to poor posture or even back pain. Stick length is always measured in inches. In the table below, you can see which length best matches your child’s height. Want to learn more about choosing the right size? What Carbon Percentage Should a Junior Stick Have?

The carbon percentage determines how stiff a hockey stick feels. The higher the carbon content, the stiffer the stick. Giving you more power and speed in passes and hits. The trade-off? A stiffer stick requires more refined technique: if your first touch isn’t perfect, the ball can bounce off more easily.

Here are some simple guidelines:

  1. 10%–30% (flexible stick): great for the youngest players and beginners
  2. 30%–70% (all-round stick): ideal for youth players up to U14
  3. 70%–100% (stiff stick): best for players U16 and older

What Curve Suits a Beginning Player?

Hockey sticks differ in their curve, measured in millimeters. For beginners, a stick with a smaller curve is ideal, because it provides more control when hitting and stopping the ball.

The Curve Location also matters, this is the point (measured from the toe of the stick) where the curve begins. For kids who are just starting out, a stick with a higher Curve Location is best, allowing them to gradually build their skills. This type of stick is often called a mid-bow stick.

The Weight of the Stick

For young and beginner players, a lightweight stick is the best choice. Kids are still developing their strength and coordination, so a lighter stick helps them move easily and maintain handling speed. At the same time, it provides enough weight for a powerful hit or pass. That balance helps young players improve technique and build strength step by step.

Where Is the Balance Point?

The balance point of a stick can vary: evenly distributed, closer to the handle, or closer to the toe. For young or beginner players, a balance point near the toe is ideal. It makes it easier to generate power, even with less refined technique, and adds stability during ball contact, helping kids develop better control and feel for the ball.

Choosing the right hockeystick might seem tricky, but when you pay attention to length, carbon percentage, weight, balance, and curve, you’ll easily find the perfect match for your child. Consider their height, strength, and skill level to ensure they can play comfortably, safely, and confidently.
