What is a base grip?
A base grip for a padel racket is the grip that comes pre-installed on the racket.
What is an overgrip?
An overgrip for a padel racket is an extra layer of grip that you wrap over the existing grip. The purpose of an overgrip is to improve the racket’s grip, provide additional comfort, absorb sweat, and extend the lifespan of the original grip. Overgrips are an essential part of padel racket maintenance and can make a big difference in your playing experience.

How do I apply a grip to my racket?

Applying a padel grip isn’t difficult, but it’s important to do it properly. You don’t want your overgrip to be too loose. To prevent this, we’ve outlined some easy steps below.

Three key tips to remember when applying a grip:

  • Keep your thumb on the grip as you wrap downward.
  • Start at the bottom of the racket handle.
  • Maintain firm tension on the grip while wrapping.

You’ll need:

  • An overgrip
  • Optional: scissors

Step 1

Remove the old overgrip (if present). Start by removing the old overgrip by unwinding it from the top of the handle.

Step 1

Step 2

Place the new overgrip. Start at the bottom of the handle. Most overgrips have a narrow, sticky end that serves as the starting point. Attach this sticky end to the base of the handle.

Step 1

Step 3

Wrap the overgrip tightly around the handle of your racket. Keep the overgrip firm as you wrap it evenly upwards, making sure no air bubbles or wrinkles form. Overlap the layers as desired: more overlap results in a thicker grip, while less overlap creates a thinner grip.

Step 3

Step 4

When you reach the top of the handle, use the end of the overgrip to secure it firmly. Most overgrips come with a piece of tape to fasten the end in place.

Step 4

Step 5

There are several options to finish your grip:

Option 1: Trim off any excess material so the overgrip ends neatly and evenly.

Option 2: Wrap the overgrip completely around the handle and use a piece of tape to secure the end for a clean, tight finish.
